ARCHITECTURE
REHABILITATING PORTLAND - DESIGN THESIS
Isle of Portland, Dorset
Masters design thesis, using carved spaces to create an architecture and landscape of healing. Based around the particularities of island environments and the human reaction to being cut off from wider society as explored in the design primer, I designed a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre and health spa located within an abandoned stone quarry on the Isle of Portland, Dorset.
The work is based around the juxtaposition of carved and solid elements, and the natural / as found nature of the landscape and man-made additions. Portland stone is used as a unifying material, being both carved into to form spaces within the sold rock, as well as used for aggregate for the new built elements.
